What is an MMS?

MMS is a multimedia messaging service for sending messages that contain pictures, videos, audio and formatted text, with more flexibility and capacity than SMS.

Everything you need to know about the end of MMS

An SMS is a text message of up to 160 characters without an attached file. A text message that includes a file (an image, a video, an emoji or a link to a website) is an MMS.

This decision was taken following a significant decline in the use of MMS in recent years.

Messaging applications such as WhatsApp, Luxchat, Signal and Messenger have become more popular because they offer similar functionality without limitations on size or cost.

No. Your call plan will not let you send or receive MMS. However, there are alternatives in modern messaging apps.

cf: FAQ: What are the alternatives to MMS?

The MMS will not be sent and you will be warned of the sending failure via an error message: ‘Not delivered’ or ‘Not sent’. Some smartphones with built-in messaging may automatically redirect you to alternatives such as iMessage (Apple) or Google RCS (Android) via the 4G or WiFi network.

You will not receive the MMS and will not be warned if it fails to arrive. Some smartphones with built-in messaging may automatically redirect you to alternatives such as iMessage (Apple) or Google RCS (Android) via the 4G or WiFi network.

No. You will not be charged if an MMS is unsent.

Alternatives to MMS include free downloadable messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Luxchat, Messenger and Viber. Other options are embedded in smartphones:

  • iMessage for Apple users;

  • Google RCS Chat for Android users.

These apps and integrated messaging services can be used to send messages, photos, videos and other files at a higher quality than MMS and with extra features.

No. Sending and receiving MMS on a network other than the POST network will no longer be possible.

The iMessage instant messaging service is reserved for Apple users.

  • In ‘Message’, when the conversation bubble is blue, this means that your correspondent has an iPhone and that both of you have activated the iMessage service. You can therefore send each other files via iMessage using the internet connection.

  • When the conversation bubble is green, this can mean a number of things:
    - Your correspondent does not have an Apple smartphone
    - Your correspondent has an iPhone, but the iMessage service is not active or their iPhone is not connected to the internet.

RCS chats are reserved for Android users. They are only activated when all the participants in the conversation have RCS.

Google Messages lets you know when your message has been sent, received and read thanks to the icons displayed next to it:

  • Timer : your message is being sent.
  • Tick : your message has been sent.
  • Double tick : your message has been delivered to the recipient.
  • Coloured double tick : your message has been read.
